Andrew Martyn grew up in Australia, he even had a Koala. Let’s skip ahead a bit, since we know this part doesn’t interest you.

Andrew went through high school with fairly average grades, which didn’t allow him to consider a career at a top university. But he still wanted to go to college, just like his whole family had. He chose psychology, but still didn’t know what to do with his life, he graduated at 21, so he wasn’t exactly ready to treat other people…in other words, he was still lost. Sounds familiar? 😉

What do we do when we don’t know what to do and have to make big decisions? Some people go to a counselor, some ask their friends or parents, and the risk-takers leave it to chance by flipping a coin, for example. But Andrew did the sensible thing and went to his university’s guidance office. Let’s imagine the conversation, we’re sure will also sound familiar to you:

“Hi, I came because I don’t know which path to follow. I’m lost.”

“Well, it’s normal at your age. Why don’t you do an internship? That way, you can experiment and find something that interests you.”

Andrew applied to three internship programs and got accepted into two of them. He was about to go the military route, since the first program he got into was for the Department of Defense. He even considered it, since his brother also worked there and he could move to the capital. But when he saw the other program he got in, he got curious.

It was a telecommunications company, but he wouldn’t just be a typical intern who fetched coffee. He would actually be trained in leadership and management. So Andrew started in the world of telcos.

There, he became specialized in the internet, bought one of the first Apple computers, and connected it to a modem in his room. He was transferred to the customer service department and realized that many people called with modem and internet connection problems. Andrew responded to these frequently asked questions with what would be a slideshow presentation today: “What is the internet? How do our customers use it?” and so on.

Andrew’s attitude and mastery caught the attention of a manager, who offered him a junior product manager position in another company. Although he didn’t know what a product manager was, he accepted the offer.

At this point, Andrew began to realize that he enjoyed being at the center of everything, doing the math, but also creating strategies, thinking about how to move things forward, and being in contact with advertising agencies. This is where everything suddenly changed, and Andrew’s professional life was about to take a 180-degree turn.

Do you remember the manager who offered him the product manager job? Well, she nominated Andrew for a scholarship to do an MBA at none other than the Melbourne Business University, and of course, he got accepted. Andrew was able to enjoy 18 months with a full scholarship to do the master’s degree.

However, not everything can be perfect. When he finished the Master’s and started working in the corporate world, contrary to his previous experience, he recognized something new this time, this world was not for him. He was very grateful for the investment they had made in him, but what Andrew wanted was to be involved in the nitty-gritty of work, so he resigned.

Andrew was even more lost, so he packed his bags and embarked on another adventure, heading to the cold lands of Denmark, without a job and without knowing Danish, Andrew liked the feeling of risk.

During the Master’s, he met a Danish guy with whom he still maintained a friendship, so he contacted him and joined a startup project he had in the dot-com market. 9/11 shook the world, and this tragic event brought with it a disastrous crisis that caused the dot-com market a significant downturn.

Andrew starts to flirt with the world of entrepreneurship through a consulting job, but that wasn’t for him either. He had bigger ambitions.
